What Causes Gout

April 14th, 2012

Are You Looking for Information About What Causes Gout?*

Joints of the Human Fingers

So what causes gout anyway? According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes for Health (NIH), gout is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the blood. This is also known as hyperuricemia. This uric acid build up is caused by the purine in rich foods and alcohol. This is usually not the only factor though. People can be genetically predisposed to not get rid of uric acid like they should.*

So gout is caused by uric acid build up for various reasons depending on the individual. When those high levels of uric acid crystallize and become deposited in joints, tendons and surrounding tissue, then you have gout. There is the accompanying painful joints and swelling typical of gout. These deposits generally manifest as recurrent bouts of inflammatory arthritis (inflicting the big toe in half of all cases) but can also cause kidney stones, tophi and urate nephropathy.*

Who’s at Risk from the Causes of Gout?*

What causes gout primarily affects men (and post-menopausal women). High-risk candidates for gout include people who are overweight, heavy drinkers, or who eat too many foods high in purine, an organic compound found in high quantities in many meats and seafood. Gout can also be caused by some diuretics, which are often prescribed to alleviate high blood pressure.*

How Can I Prevent Gout Causes?*

According to the NIH, anyone who suffers from gout, or believes themselves to be at high risk for what causes gout, should consider consulting a health care provider.  The NIH also recommends making healthier lifestyle choices (exercise!) and eating habits (especially reducing alcohol consumption) as a preventative measure against the common causes of gout.*

However, they also claim that the vast majority of gout cases are not a result of dietary causes alone. Many people are genetically predisposed to have higher levels of uric acid in their blood. These higher levels can often be harmless, but does put these individuals at an increased risk of developing gout.*

What Should I Do During a Gouty Attack?*

Joints of the Human BodyThe NIH says health care providers will often recommend or prescribe the following medicines for gout:*

  • Anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen)*
  • Prescription painkillers like codeine, hydrocodone, and oxycodone*
  • For serious enough cases: injections of steroids into the affected joints*

My Gout Bout Passed. Should I Still Be Worried?*

According to the NIH, in a word, yes. Aside from the fact that gouty attacks are often recurring, gout is commonly associated with a host of other health problems. Many people suffering from gout are also suffering from metabolic syndrome, which indicates that they have at least 3 of the following conditions:*

  • High blood pressure or hypertension.*
  • Abdominal obesity.*
  • A High triglyceride level.*
  • A Low HDL cholesterol level.*
  • High fasting blood sugar.*

They also claim that anyone who suffers from metabolic syndrome can be at seriously increased risk for diabetes, heart disease and stroke.*

What Does Eastern Medicine Have to Say About What Causes Gout?

According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on a different and unique world view:

“Underlying the practice of TCM is a unique view of the world and the human body that is different from Western medicine concepts. This view is based on the ancient Chinese perception of humans as microcosms of the larger, surrounding universe—interconnected with nature and subject to its forces. The human body is regarded as an organic entity in which the various organs, tissues, and other parts have distinct functions but are all interdependent. In this view, health and disease relate to balance of the functions.”

Thus according to the Eastern Medicine philosophy, all ‘dis’-ease is caused by imbalance in the body. They believe that supporting the body is the key to health, wellness and longevity with a high quality of life. They believe that supporting healthy uric acid metabolism will create conditions where gout can’t exist. Eastern Medicine has used the essential herbs Morinda, Ecliptae, Alisma and Prunella for centuries to promote healthy uric acid metabolism and to support pain-and-gout-free health and longevity.*

What Is Gout

Gout (Joint Pain)

What is Gout?

What is Gout anyway? Gout is a primarily a condition in the joint that is caused by the excessive concentration of high uric acid crystals within the joint cartilage, synovial fluid and tissue. These crystals can cause intense pain whenever the area of the buildup is moved. Gout is a type of arthritis but has completely different causes than other forms of arthritis such as rheumatoid or osteoarthritis. Gout occurs primarily in men but can affect women as well. Approximately 5 million Americans suffer from gout.Joints of the Human Fingers - What Is Gout

Symptoms of Gout?

Typical symptoms of gout can include sudden, excruciating, burning or sharp joint pain, swelling, loss of mobility, redness, and needle like pain in joints. Most gout sufferers experience their first symptom in the big toe. Additional symptoms may also appear in other joints such as the elbow, fingers, ankle, wrist or spine as well as feeling symptoms of fever and chills. For example, a blanket or even the lightest sheet draped over the affected area can cause extreme pain. Gout can also cause inflammation of the tissues around the joint. This can cause the skin to become swollen, tender, warm and irritated even when slightly touched like from a blanket or piece of clothing touching the affected area.

What Causes Gout?

Gout is caused in most cases by an excessive buildup of uric acid crystals within the joints. Most initial gout attacks occur at night and transpire after an event like drinking excessive alcohol, a trauma, a surgery or from certain drugs. In eastern medicine philosophies, it is believed that body imbalance may lead to poor uric acid metabolism and if the body is not breaking these uric acid crystals down efficiently, then they can become stored in the joints. Poor lifestyle choices like obesity, rich foods, high meat consumption and alcohol can contribute to gout attacks. Foods that are high in purines can cause uric acid levels to rise in the body. Purines are a specific chemical compounds found in certain foods.

What are Common Treatments for Gout?

When gout attacks occur, most western trained medical doctors give their patients two common drug treatments: either non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (also known as NSAIDs) or corticosteroids. Some commonly prescribed NSAIDS are diclofenac, etoricoxib, indomethacin, ketoprofen, naproxen or sulindac.1 These drug treatments are usually taken orally or injected into the affected joint. While NSAIDs and corticosteroids may reduce the inflammation caused by deposits of uric acid crystals in the joints, they have no effect on the amount of uric acid in the body which still can be elevated.

What about Natural Dietary Support for those with Gout?*

In eastern medicine, practitioners of traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) use herbal combinations to support the bodys own health mechanisms. Many of the TCM herbs have been used successfully for hundreds of years to offer specific body support. According to the book Alternative Medicine many researchers believe that a proper balance of vitamins and minerals is essential in the treatment of all arthritis This book describes several natural ingredients that may provide health benefits for those with forms of arthritis such as gout. This book also states that whole (unprocessed) foods are rich in the nutrients needed to fight destructive free radicals, enhance tissue health, repair bones, joints, muscles, and promote bowel regularity. Drinking sufficient water everyday may also help to flush out toxins like excessive uric acid.*

Additional Information

All prescription and non-prescription pharmaceutical drugs can have side effects. When considering taking a drug for gout, be sure to educate yourself by reading either the side effects label on the drug that you are considering or reading the Physicians Desk Reference (PDR). Also, even if you are considering taking an aspirin, ask your doctor about side effects since aspirin can make gout worse by raising the uric acid level in the body. On another note, some people, who believe they have Gout, actually may have other forms of arthritis such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis so proper diagnosis is important.*
